Okay. This one is going to be succinct and to-the-point. I'm tired of seeing people howl and go postal because they clicked on a fanfiction link labeled "yaoi" and got exactly what it advertised. The vast majority of authors do not label their fics as practical jokes, people. You will not get pr0n of Cloud, Aeris and Tifa having a threesome if you click on a fanfiction link labeled "yaoi." This is like expecting a dog to have kittens. Okay, so that wasn't the best analogy, but the point stands. I don't know why, but your Typical Xenofic Reader seems to go exceptionally postal when confronted with yaoi-themed fics. I suppose it's partly because your typical reader tends to equate "same-sex relationship" with "gay," and almost all of the main male characters display a definite propensity towards the opposite sex in the game. Thus, authors of yaoi-themed fics are liable to receive such helpful comments as "Sigurd didn't have a relationship with Ramsus!", "Citan wasn't in love with Sigurd!", "That's sick!" or "(name of character) IS NOT GAY!!" Look, morons, the vast majority of such writers KNOW that male/male relationships are not exactly up your alley as far as masturbatory material du jour goes. That's why we put the damn warnings in. If you don't want to read yaoi, don't click on it. It's as simple as that. And please do us the favor of reserving your comments on how "sick" and "wrong" we are if you get your keyboards sticky over pictures of Elly with Rico or Miang. If you click on a link to a fic labeled simply as "lemon" and get a half-literate story about pre-pubescent girls having sex with dogs, then yes, you have the right to inform the author that they are a sick fuck and the offspring of a goat and a woman of dubious morals. If you click on a link to a fic labeled "yaoi," "shounen-ai" or "m/m relationships" (for the benefit of those who've been living in a hole for the past few years and don't know what 'yaoi' refers to) and get just that, then shut yer mouth and quit yer whining. I may be an admitted masochist at times when it comes to reading things which make me want to personally prevent the authors from ever breeding, but at least I know what I'm in for when I click the links. If you have a legitimate complaint about the author's writing style or lack thereof, plotting, or grasp of the game's plot, that's all well and good. But if you feel like throwing a hissy fit merely because yaoi is not to your tastes, keep it to yourself. The rest of fandom is not going to adjust its own tastes to keep you happy. Get over it. There. I promised it'd be short. |
